Balmoral Australia is the family office of Australia’s Oatley family, and proudly carries forward the vision of our founder Robert Oatley AO, BEM (1928 – 2016).
Over a nearly 70 year career Robert (Bob) Oatley grew a diverse family of businesses spanning coffee, vineyards, wineries, cattle, thoroughbreds, real estate, luxury tourism and investments. Bob was one of Australia’s great entrepreneurs.
In the 1960s, Bob established the now famous Hunter Valley based Rosemount Estate which he sold in 2001. He then acquired Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef in 2003, and invested extensively to make Hamilton Island one of Australia’s most spectacular luxury holiday destinations. The Oatley family have been proud owners of Hamilton Island until April 2026. During this time the family has invested extensively in facilities, services and people to create an Australian destination that is truly world class.
Bob Oatley returned to the wine industry in 2006 to launch his eponymous Robert Oatley label.
Bob was passionate about his family, about Australia and about people. His great personal pleasure was sailing, and this legacy continues today through the Wild Oats Yachting program.
Bob’s children Sandy, Ian and Rosalind are stewards of the family vision.
